In whole language, meaning is paramount. Rather than learning phonics skills out of context, children are taught about the parts of language while they pursue “authentic” reading and writing. High-quality children's literature and children's own writing are central—and provide the context for skills instruction. Whole Language instruction is a theory of language instruction that was developed to help young children learn to read, and has also been extended to middle and secondary levels and to the teaching of ESL. Whole Language Approach stresses that language learning happens in interactional and functional ways.
